Rehab Movement, Not Just a Body Part

By Insights

Hip extension is the key centre of human movement and strong gluteal function is essential to get the hip into hyper extension to generate movement forward. Knee, shoulder and even back rehab should include hyper extension of the hip in order to regain a healthy, full-body movement since your walking gait is compromised whenever you have an injury or any kind.

In this insightful video, Dr. Homayun Gharavi-Nouri takes us through the evolution of movement and how you can adjust your focus to rehabilitating movement:

WCPT releases annual review

By Insights

The World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) has released its annual review, providing a comprehensive update on the state of the industry and initiatives to bring professionals closer together.

Physical therapists from WCPT member organisations in 26 countries took part in WCPT’s committees and expert groups and 360 people volunteered as abstract reviewers for WCPT Congress 2017. WCPT staff delivered advocacy workshops in Japan and Senegal, and the SUDA project has led to membership applications from Ivory Coast, Mali, Morocco, and Senegal.

WCPT held its first congress in Africa in 2017 and the event attracted 2,392 delegates from 101 countries. The congress was recognised for funding bursaries which enabled 19 physical therapists to attend, raising money for community exercise programmes, and developing partnerships to promote physical activity in schools.

The review is available for download here.

[TREND WATCH] This Next-Generation Exosuit Provides Enhanced Mobility Options

By Insights

We love the innovation that is taking place in the world of movement and biomechanics and we are constantly scouring the globe for innovative new technology to guide our thinking.

Check this out:

Researchers from the Wyss Institute of Harvard University have developed a wearable robot that functions to support the wearer in scenarios in which movement capabilities are severely impacted. A sophisticated system of cables, a garment, motors, and cables come together to offer a fully integrated experience. Stefano de Rossi, a postdoctoral fellow in the Wyss Institute, said of the thinking behind the invention, “When people think about traditional robotic systems, they don’t think about something that can be worn by a person. When developing this soft exosuit, we start with the analysis of human biomechanics.”

Interview with Angela Newton – Functional Medicine Fast Track Program Graduate

By Insights

We are passionate about the idea of knowledge sharing and connecting experts in the world of movement. Today we bring you this interview by Garric Vosloo who interviews Angela Newton (Simpson) on Functional Medicine Physiotherapy. Angela is a graduate of the Functional Medicine Fast Track Program.

After doing so many physiotherapy CPD courses, Angela realized that there was still a missing area to understanding how to solve chronic patients and patients that plateau. Genetic testing has also become a mainstay in her assessment.

Angela tells her story:

Physical inactivity has been identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a leading risk factor for mortality causing an estimated 3.2 million deaths globally. In a positive move to decrease physical inactivity, WHO Member States, together with the World Heart Federation, aim to reduce insufficient physical activity by 10% by 2025 and achieve a 15% relative reduction in the global prevalence of physical inactivity in adults and adolescents by 2030.

To support the achievement of this ambitious WHO action plan, a free Open Online Course will continue the global effort to improve and increase physical activity knowledge and skills among health care professions.

To find out more about this, read this blog post from Ann Gates.

Why the hospital of the future will be your own home | Niels van Namen

By Insights, Uncategorized

Nobody likes going to the hospital, whether it’s because of the logistical challenges of getting there, the astronomical costs of procedures or the alarming risks of complications like antibiotic-resistant bacteria. But what if we could get the lifesaving care provided by hospitals in our own homes? Health care futurist Niels van Namen shows how advances in technology are making home care a cheaper, safer and more accessible alternative to hospital stays.

We share many of these views and we believe that this is one of the reasons that our 3D Joint ROM home user monitoring offering can be such a powerful tool for clinicians and patients. Enjoy!
